Karen Higgs

Karen created Guru’Guay, the most popular English-language website on Uruguay, in 2013. Her Guru’Guay guidebooks to Uruguay and Montevideo have been recognized by the Uruguay Ministry of Tourism and the Government of Montevideo as an essential reference for both travelers and expats.

Karen has been interviewed about Uruguay as a travel and lifestyle destination by international media—including the New York Times, the BBC and National Geographic–and on the world’s most listened to travel podcasts. She appears regularly in the national press.

Karen is British and studied in the UK and the U.S. at UC Berkeley. She lived in the U.S., Costa Rica, Argentina and Spain before settling in Uruguay in 2000 with her husband and small son. They loved it so much that they never left.

She’s excited to share her experience and contacts with other foreigners considering Uruguay as a destination. It's not a good fit for everyone. No place is perfect, right?
